How Parents Can Help a Child Through Exam Stress

Exam season is stressful for the whole family. Small changes in what you say and how home runs can make your child calmer — and more productive.

Exam season is stressful for the whole family. As a parent, you can't write the exam for your child — but you can make a big difference to how calm, rested and focused they feel.

Signs your child is under too much stress

  • Trouble sleeping, or sleeping far more than usual
  • Loss of appetite, headaches or stomach aches before tests
  • Irritability, tears or withdrawing from family
  • Saying things like "I'm useless" or "There's no point"
  • Avoiding study completely

A little nervousness is normal. If several of these signs last for weeks, it's time to step in gently.

What helps

Talk about effort, not marks

Say "I can see how hard you're working" rather than "You must get 95%." Praising effort builds the steady confidence children need in the exam hall.

Help them plan — then step back

Sit together once to break the syllabus into a weekly plan. After that, check in briefly each evening instead of supervising every hour.

Protect sleep, food and movement

Keep regular meal times, healthy snacks and water nearby, and a fixed bedtime. A short walk together in the evening is good for both of you.

Create a calm study space

A quiet corner with good light, and fewer distractions at home during study hours — TV volume down, phones away for everyone.

Listen more than you advise

When your child shares a worry, listen fully first. "That sounds really stressful" helps more than an immediate solution.

What to avoid

  • Comparisons with siblings, cousins or classmates.
  • Last-minute pressure — the night before an exam is for rest, not lectures.
  • Post-exam interrogations. Ask "How do you feel?" instead of "How many marks will you get?", then move on to the next paper.

After the results

Whatever the marks, let your child know your love doesn't depend on them. Talk calmly about what went well and what to change next time.
